Tradewind: The Kite Initative

Thursday, May 11, 2006

.ISPO news.: "TradeWind: the ispo kite initiative receives considerable support
The kite surfing industry will host its first ever appearance at the ispo summer 06, to be held from July 16th through 18th, 2006. To date it looks as if it will be a very strong appearance, as renowned names have already confirmed their attendance of the largest industry meeting, among them Naish Kites from Hawaii. The wind and kite surfing legend Robby Naish will introduce the latest innovations from his own kite and board manufacturing facilities. In addition to in-depth presentations of new kites, boards, and the matching accessories, there will also be a number of side events. Side events, which are geared to introduce those visitors unfamiliar with kite surfing to the sport and provide them with a glimpse into its attraction. “The ispo’s TradeWind initiative is finally a strong and professional retail platform for this sport. The detailed presentation of new materials as well as of the different variations of kite surfing will certainly contribute to further drawing the attention of the sports industry to this growing and exciting sport,” says Christian May, General Importer Germany for Cabrinha & RRD. Kiteworld new issue

Kiteworld: Issue 21 - The Commitment Issue
May 10th, 2006

Issue 21 is out now! Its aim: to get you tooled up for the summer.

For two weeks in March we dodged the thunderstorms and rain clouds to make the most of Tarifa’s unbeatable variety of conditions and test some of the kit that’s going to help you improve your riding this summer.
From 12 to 35 knots, on waves and flat water, we rode light-wind freestyle and early intermediate boards, wave riding twin tips, all the bow kites you need to know about, as well as many high-performance C kites. We’ve got your ride covered this summer.

Also, the IKO continue their series aiming to breed safe intermediate riders. This time they provide with all you need to know to become an independent rider, including; choosing your location, self-launching bow and C kites, and rights of way.

The Commitment Series explores three areas of kiteboarding, focussing on the characters and drive that have led to their development. There’s no escaping the big ‘C’ word in kiting, whether you’re dipping the kite for the first time or pulling into the wall of your life. From day one, commitment issues are everywhere. We delve into the intricacies of the kite-loop with Dimitri Maramenides, the world of the barrel, and we reach dizzy heights with the undisputed master of snowkiting, world champion and free-ride junkie, Guillaume Chastagnol.

Issue 21 is bursting from its binding with help to get you on the water as often as possible, wherever you are. We’ve more technique features than ever before and we’ve even reviewed some of the best waterproof MP3 player cases.

Again, photographers from these shores and beyond, have stocked us up with their best inspirational photography, and we’ve also crammed in the usual riding tips, reviews, news and lots, lots more…bring on the sea breeze!

Petit Navire Grand Prix Results

bymnews.com: "For this final day of the 2006 Petit Navire Grand Prix, the Kitesurfers raced three heats in 12 to 15 knots of wind, offering some great pictures to mark the close of this 2006 edition of the Petit Navire Grand Prix.

Petit Navire Kitesurfing Grand Prix: three heats raced:

While there was not quite as much wind as initially forecast for this final day of the 2006 Petit Navire Grand Prix, it did however allow the competitors to race three heats in some fabulous light. Three welcome heats after the scratched day on Sunday, which allowed Pierre Romain to win the Petit Navire Kitesurfing Grand Prix for the second consecutive year. While the rider from Carnac did not win the slightest heat today, he once again showed his ability to be consistent by finishing second in the third and fourth heats, then third in the very final race. Unfortunately for them the two Bretons from Finistère, Paolo Rista and Bruno Sroka, were unable to do anything, in spite of their fine performances today, to rival a kitesurfer, who was clearly pleased with his second win in the Petit Navire Kitesurfing Grand Prix: «Today, the wind was steadier and there were fewer wind holes than during the two races on Saturday. Last year, the big difference was down to my choice of board. For this edition, lots of competitors used similar equipment. It was almost as if it was a monotype event. At least, that really shows what you personally are capable of.»"

Information for Slingshot Turbo Diesel Owners

First off we want to thank everyone for their continued patience and support while we address the topic of the 2006 Turbo Diesel upgrade.

We recognize there has been some confusion surrounding the mid season upgrades. Some of your bars have been manufactured with all of the current upgrades and some previous versions have not. We are here to offer you a clear solution.

FIRST________________________________________________________

There are two versions of a complete 4 Line Powerstroke Safety Bar that comes with the Turbo Diesel. Both versions are correct. The only difference is purely cosmetic at the de-power TRIM handle. This difference does not effect performance.

Below are what both options look like: Note attaching your Quick Release Surefire Bungee here is only for advanced riders. This option will not provide as much de-power as the alternative of attaching your leash to the Center Line Safety Line ring. The benefit to attaching your ring here is avoiding having to manually unwind your lines while riding.

Recommended for beginners to achieve 100% de-power and safety refer to the information below.

Information on optimal Surefire Bungee Leash Attachment

download here.

SECOND______________________________________________________

This is what your finished bar should look like.

To determine if you need to make any adjustments to your existing bar.

1. Make sure your bar has the enhanced Marine Grade Stainless Steel Dug Out insert. If it doesn't refer to instruction set A pages 1-8.
2. Make sure the de-power side of the chicken loop line has a new yellow Power Ball. If it doesn't refer to instruction set A pages 5-7.
3. Make sure your bar comes equipped with the Center Line Safety System. If it doesn't refer to instruction set A pages 7-8.
4. Make sure there is a Surefire yellow stopper ball on the flying line that is attached to the de-power ring of the Center Line Safety System about half way between your kite and bar. If there isn't refer to instruction set A page 8.
5. Make sure all of of line lengths are even when you have the bar fully sheeted in and the de-power trimmed in 1 cm. If they are not then refer to trouble shooting tips below.

Download Instruction Set A Here

THIRD_______________________________________________________

Trouble Shooting Tips.

If you have meet all the requirements 1-4 your lines are still uneven after you completed with 5; you will need to shorten your chicken loop line. Please follow these instructions:

Scoop: Kites down but not out at Hyundai Nationals

Scoop: Kites down but not out at Hyundai Nationals: "Kites down but not out at Hyundai Nationals

Fickle weather conditions added to the challenge for kiteboarders at the 2006 Hyundai Kiteboarding Nationals held over the weekend at Raglan.

An unusual lack of wind meant it was only possible for the juniors to compete officially, but organisers still rate the event as an outstanding success, socially if not weather-wise.

Organiser Delphine Ducaruge said the number of competitors registered for the event was up 50 percent on last year, with 74 people turning up to compete.

“This included a good cross section of kitesurfers. We had six juniors, six masters and eleven female competitors, which is a very good sign for the sport.”

She said organisers set up on Raglan’s Oceanview beach fully expecting good wind conditions on the normally reliable west coast, but mother nature did not oblige.

“We were aiming to have the competition on the out-going tide after midday, but had to change that to the incoming tide in the morning when the wind came from the east. We had enough wind to run seven heats, but unfortunately not enough to finish the competition.”

Sunday saw enough breeze to stage the Junior Champs. The winners were both Tauranga riders, with Marc Jacobs winning and Torrin Bright runner up."

Outside Online Article on Tarifa, Spain

Blown Away
Wind, waves, and siestas—just a few of the reasons to discover Tarifa, Spain

"STRETCHED OUT on the white sand, I watched a Spanish kiteboarding instructor run past me down the beach, yelling, "Work eet! Work eet!" into a walkie-talkie transmitting to the helmet of a tawny Swede ripping her candy–colored kite through the azure sky. Awesome conditions, I thought. I really should get out there—just as soon as I finish my nap."

And so it continues...

CabrinhaKites - Sprint™

CabrinhaKites - Sprint™: "The Sprint™ inflation system is a simple to use feature to quickly inflate your kite to an even pressure. The Sprint™ system uses a single inflation point to connect your high volume, two way Cabrinha pump. As you pump your kite with air, all struts and your leading edge inflate quickly and simultaneously to the desired pressure. The supplied leash pump and threaded valve connection keeps your kite under control even when pumping up directly in the wind.

Once the kite is pumped you can choose to clip off, or isolate the air contained in the struts. This way if you damage a strut while in use, the rest of the kite will continue to maintain its pressure. At the end of the session you can choose to deflate your kite completely by disengaging the strut air clips. Or you can keep your struts inflated and put your kite away rolled up so that the next session will takes just minutes to set up."

Cabrinha's Override 2

Security Depower System
Cabrinha introduced the concept of Depower On Demand with the release of the innovative Override™ system. Now, with the introduction of Override™ 2, Cabrinha has once again redefined it. One of the most valuable features of a Cabrinha bow kite is it’s ability to immediately depower the kite on demand by simply pushing the control system into Override mode. With Override™ 2 you can avoid many accidents before they happen by maintaining control over the power of your kite at all times. Unlike many other kites, the Cabrinha bow kites can be depowered without ever taking your hands off of the control bar.

Another useful feature of Override is that you can temporarily let go of the control bar to un-spin your lines. When the Override stopper unit is seated on its sleeve it will temporarily stop the bar from entering the Override mode while you spin you bar to untwist your lines.

Override™ 2 Tension Ring
The stopper unit is set set to release at a load of approximately 10kg. A tension ring is supplied if you would like to increase the release load. With each click of the ring the tension is increased around the stopper and the release load becomes higher. It should be noted that increased loads will require more force to unseat the stopper and put the control bar into Override mode.

The Override unit is set at the factory in the position where the kite starts to lose its power. The area between the unit and the Centerline Adjustment Strap is called the Override mode. To depower the kite, push the control system into the Override mode. If the stopper unit is seated onto its sleeve you will need to unseat it with a firm push. When the control bar is pushed into the Override mode, the kite will lose its power and immediately begin to drop from the sky.

The recovery couldn’t be any simpler. Just grab ahold of the control bar, straighten the lines and its ready to relaunch again. If you want to re-set the Override stopper unit just pull it back onto the sleeve until it clicks into place.

When launching the kite from land it is recommended to leave the Override stopper unit off of it’s sleeve so that the kite can be depowered immediately by placing the bar into the Override mode.

Override 2 can also be used when performing unhooked tricks. First, be sure to unseat the Override stopper unit from its sleeve. Then connect your leash to the ring on the harness loop. When the rider drops the bar during a missed trick attempt, the kite will depower and fall from the sky. To recover the kite just grab ahold of the control bar, un-spin any twists in the line and relaunch the kite.

Powerlock™ 3 Control System

CabrinhaKites - Contra with Powerlock™ 3 Control System
: "The Contra specialized light wind kite comes with an enhanced control system that allows you take full advantage of all the Contra has to offer.

We’ve made many tweaks and modifications based on our invaluable customer feedback to deliver the most cutting edge control system to date.

Override™ 2
The new Override™ stopper has been re-designed for more positive engagement and disengagement. The new internal catch mechanism is now mechanic instead of friction. It makes re-setting Override onto its sleeve a snap. Literally!

The external shape of Override™ 2 accomplishes two things. First, the new ergonomics allow for a much better grip on the fitting when re-setting it onto its sleeve. Secondly the design integrates the CAS Power Adjusters for a much cleaner and more streamline operation of the kite’s trim. We’ve added elastic to the Power Adjusters so that they maintain positive tension no matter where they are positioned.

Power Adjuster
The CAS line extenders keep the adjustment of the centerline adjustment strap within easy reach at all time. The added bungee in the line helps to keeps the extenders free from tangling with your leaders by keeping them parallel with the centerline.

2 to 1 Pulley System
The Powerlock 3 Control System features pulleys on each end of the bar which reduce the length the rider must push the control bar to achieve the desired amount of trim or depower.

Softened EVA grip
We have reduced the diameter of the control bar and have softened the EVA grip for a more hand friendly feel.

Powerlock Ready
The Contra Control System is ready for the optional Powerlock accessory."

Cabrinha Race Series

Kiterelease - Releasable Trim Loop

Tuesday, May 30, 2006

Sports Safety Designs LLC: "Most of the time these accidents occur on or near the beach. The KiteRelease takes the place of an old fashioned spreader bar; what the KiteRelease does is to release the trimloop, separating you from the kite in most dangerous situations. The KiteRelease uses the concept of 'Safety On Demand'. When launching your kite you select 'Launch' mode on the KiteRelease. The KiteRelease will release as trimloop tension approaches rider weight. After you enter the water and put on your board you select either the 'Ride' or 'Locked' mode. The 'Ride' mode allows you to waterstart and cruise normally, while still affording a level of automatic protection. The 'Locked' mode allows full maneuvering and jumping with no restrictions. The 'Manual Release' mode is available at any time and will manually activate the release. There is no need to stop boarding while switching modes, just reach down and move the Selector Lever into the mode you want. This is easily done with one hand, and with just a little bit of experience you should be able to determine the selected mode by feel!

The KiteRelease also employs 'Soft Shackle' (Patent Pending) technology. The Soft Shackle greatly eases the process of shackling in and out. simply pull the trimloop into the hook and you're shackled in. Grab the trimloop and pull it down & back and you're out!"

PKRA Heist Final Results

Kiteboarding.be

he final day of the Euro Millions Kitesurfing World Cup 2006 was picture perfect with sunny skies, warmer temperatures and good wind. Competitors took to the water at 12:30 pm for the second discipline of the event, Big Air/Best Trick. Judges were looking for mostly “big air,” with 60% of a rider’s score appointed for height and hang time and 40% going towards technical difficulty. The riders had to first clear an outer buoy in the competition area and then perform one trick afterwards, either coming in or going out. It was their choice on which tack to perform their move but they had to clear the outer buoy each time before going for a subsequent jump. This caused some initial confusion and half way through the contest PKRA officials put up the checkered flag to abandon the current heat and review the rules. The tide was also coming in and there was quite a strong downwind current so the outer buoy was adjusted to assist the competitors.

Some international acronym cooperation: AKSA Adopts BKSA KSRR

Press Release - AKSA Adopts BKSA Kite Surfing Road Rules: "ite surfing Road Rules adopted by the British Kite Surfing Association have been adopted by the American Kite Surfing Association. The key message is, 'If in doubt don't go out.'
• Be sure that you can handle the prevailing weather conditions and never sail in offshore winds unless it is in a suitable location.
• The upwind rider gives way to the downwind rider.
• The rider on the port tack gives way the rider on starboard tack.
• Kite surfers using the seafront should give way to other water users and retreat to a safe zone outside of the navigational channel when other craft approach.
• The seafront can get exceptionally busy both on the beach and in the water. No matters how competent you are, or good the conditions look, never risk the safety of others.
• Always maintain a 50-metre downwind safety zone between yourself and other craft. In the event of coming into conflict with other water users stabilize your kite at noon.
• Never kite surf within 50-metres upwind of any moored vessel.
• Never kite surf in or near to the bathing areas and swimmers, buoys and boat moorings.
• Never practice jumping on land or close to the beach.
• When returning to the beach, give way to riders who are launching. "

Psychic says tomorrow is the day of Atlantic Tsunamis

Save Lives In May.com

People are nuts, I tell you, nuts. Here's the warning for tomorrow from a psychic with a mission:

"I have received information psychically, which is corroborated by scientific data, according to which on May 25, 2006 a giant tsunami will occur in the Atlantic Ocean, brought about by the impact of a comet fragment which will provoke the eruption of under-sea volcanoes. Waves up to 200 m high will reach coastlines located above and below the Tropic of Cancer. However, all of the countries bordering the Atlantic will be affected to greater or lesser destructive and deadly levels. This site is dedicated to life, to civic responsibility and to information. There is still time to save lives. Thanks for participating in the world-wide alert!" -- Eric Julien

Windwing is dead, long live windwing

Hood River, OR, May 22, 2006 - Windwing is pleased to announce a new production schedule for their 2006-07 line of inflatable kites and windsurfing sails. Production is currently underway in China and Sri Lanka with a committed schedule for many years to come. All Windwing sails such as the Bash and Hammer are now available for immediate delivery while kites and bars will be available the first week of June 2006.

With this new production, a NEW line of user-friendly kites called the Rampage (see next release), as well as our proven and popular high-aspect performance kite, the Rapture II will be produced. The NEW and improved Rage II will certainly be in the line-up along with the extreme high-jumping Outrage model. Our popular and revolutionary extended range Cruise Control and B-Safe kite bars will be available for delivery shortly.

"After 24 years, the delay in production has been hard on the company." Said John Chao, owner and director of Windwing, "It has however helped us to re-structure and re-define our priorities as a viable business within this dynamic and ever changing sport."

The re-structure has not affected the root values of the company. Customer service has not wavered, nor shall the product quality and affordability. Gone are the high maintenance and temperamental aspects of the business and sadly, the prestigious but low-income generating aspects of Formula Racing sails.

There are also changes in Windwing's design philosophy. A new generation of young, energetic, talented and dedicated designers has been enlisted to maintain Windwing's reputation and "quest". Heading the team is Boarding Bob Wendler who was the instigator of Windwing’s kite program in the beginning. Being the conscience, backbone and an unsung hero of Windwing's achievements, Boarding’ has the uncanny ability to define common sense. Together with designers Hawk Dobbins and David Comp, Windwing’s R&D is in good hands. They will carry on the tradition; carry out the philosophy, with state-of-the-art technology and a fresh new conviction.

The philosophy is simple: Proven reliability, consumer satisfaction and loyalty.

We appreciate the many supportive Windwing customers of the past 24 years — those loyal and supportive of us in the past six months. We look forward to another 24 years of leadership within the windustry.

It's so hard being Extreme: Vandals and the velocity games

Caller.com: Local News: "400-foot fence protects use of 'monster' ramp

Nissan Velocity organizers hope to keep vandals out

By mike baird Caller Times
May 24, 2006

It's hard to build a monster if late night bicyclists keep running over it.

Organizers have been trying to help protect the emerging 'monster mini-ramp' being constructed for skateboard competition in the extreme sports festival - Nissan Velocity Games '06, said Wes Maeckel, director of the competition. They have chased away some of the riders who are shifting around more than $25,000 in materials by using the unfinished ramp.
It undoes all the lag bolts,' Maeckel, 28, said. 'Each day it sets us back about three hours having to use the forklift to hoist it back in place, before shimming and leveling it."

How marketing wanks justify their existence:

Press Release - Kite Surfing Ranks as Top Extreme Sport: "/24-7PressRelease/ - May 17, 2006 - In a national survey commissioned by the American Kite Surfing Association (AKSA), kite surfing, a relatively new sport in North America, is ranked as the top Extreme Sport. Among the sixteen hundred athletes participating in the study, 71% listed kite surfing as the most exciting and dynamic extreme sport. Only a third had actually attempted the sport yet nearly all indicated that intended to 'give it a try' before the end the year. Participants were between the ages of 18 - 35 and all were self-identified sports enthusiast. The margin of error in this research is +/- 2%. Other extreme activities were far distance in ranking including skateboarding, snowboarding, surfing, inline skating, BMX, MotoX.

This dramatic interest in the athletically demanding sport has given AKSA founders encouragement about the value of their newly founded organization. Logan Long, co-founder of the association was not surprised by the results; 'It's just simply the biggest adrenaline rush available. The combination of air, water, land, wind power, physical strength and balance the force of nature are the qualities that attract Kite Surfers.'

American Kite Surfing Association is the leading organization for kite surfers in North America. Founded in 2006 by two extreme sport enthusiasts, membership is anticipated to exceed 30,000 before the end of the year. The purpose of the enterprise is to bring heightened awareness to this fast-growing, dynamic, and fun sport. A vast array of information, products, and techniques are available to the visitors of the AKSA website, www.kite-surfingusa.com. After more than a decade of popularity through Europe and Australia, active North American extreme sport athletes are recognizing the maximum adrenaline rush through kite surfing. According to Cathi Long, co-founder of AKSA, 'The exhilaration of hang time in kite surfing is unbeatable...ki"

Update on '07 Cabrinha Kite releases/features

This one from the horse's mouth:

neilprydemaui.com :: View topic - Crossbow '07: "Aloha Dave,

I think the Sprint system will be featured in all 2007 Cabrinha kites. It's here to stay.

Override 2 is a definite, if not a further evolution of it. Too soon to say on that point.

Crossbow 2 should be in stores by August, Switchblade 2 soon thereafter. However, both are still in development and won't be released until perfected, so that schedule is tentative only.

Don't be a $*!&, Kitesurfers in SA feel the wrath

Wednesday, May 17, 2006

An article reminding kiters to watch the weather, kite safely, and respect others.

"AN inconsiderate and thoughtless approach to the sport as displayed by certain members of the kiteboarding fraternity on the West Coast is putting severe pressure on the already? strained resources of the National Sea Rescue Institute.

“It is time the authorities stepped in to put regulations in place to control the sport of kiteboarding,” says NSRI Melkbosstrand Station Commander, Rhine Barnes. “Kiteboarders have been promising for years to regulate themselves but this has not happened.”

Barnes was not amused by the two separate incidents – on Thursday 4 May and Friday 5 May – when the NSRI had been called out to assist kiteboarders in trouble. “Each rescue call for a kiteboarder is a drain on limited resources.”
