The eastern third of the Event Site — the prime windsurfing area — was filled in by sediment following a fall storm. In addition, the Spit — a sandbar that served as the key launching area for kiteboarders — now extends north to the edge of the commercial shipping channel. The Marina beach is also full of glacial material from Mount Hood and the cruise ship dock at the entrance of Nichols Boat Basin has been completely blocked from access. He has some stiff competition but i reckon its a pretty cool feat that he has been nominated. In fact two kitesurfers made the cut against 1 windsurfer, 1 surfer 1 motocross and a couple of snowboarders. So perhaps kitesurfing is making the mainstream? All three of my final nominees made it. Aaron is the obvious one but you can try and guess the rest. I do think that Guisela's one off achievement hardly stands up to the others in the list but at least she kites, and kites pretty good. And the nominees for Laureus Action Sports Person of the Year are: • Aaron Hadlow (UK) – aged 17, won PKRA kiteboarding world tour for third time • Travis Pastrana (US) – motocross star, won three Summer X Games gold medals • Kevin Pritchard (US) – won windsurfing Wave World Championship • Gisela Pulido (Spain) – aged 12, won a PKRA kiteboarding event, beating the world champion • Kelly Slater (US) – won an unprecedented eighth world surfing championship at 34 • Hannah Teter (US) – snowboarder, won ESPY award for Best Action Sports Female Athlete • Shaun White (US) –won 12 snowboarding events in 2006 Check out http://www.laureus.com/ for more info and http://www.iksurfmag.com/ will have the full story... From getting yourself unstuck in the snow during your first few snowkiting experiences through to nailing more complex manoeuvres, like the surface-pass and the back loop kite loop, we then also take you on into the surf. Issue 26 sees Kiteworld test editor and long-time wave warrior, Neal Gent, tackle the intricacies of linking together mesmerising bottom turn to top turn combos, analysing sequences of two of the best wave riders in the sport right now, both unhooked and strapless and hooked-in on a hybrid kite. The Monster Buyer's Guide takes up a large chunk of the magazine's contents this issue, bringing you the findings from ten solid days testing in Tenerife. We rattle through 11 twin-tips, nine bow and hybrid kites and five super-charged C kites. And as if that wasn't enough, The Kiteworld Guide to: Holidays that comes free with issue 26 takes you on a tour of some of the best kiteboarding destinations you could visit around the world this summer. " Labels: kite ban How to Spot a Bow: From BrunoAn article from Bruno's website: Original article: http://www.inflatablekite.com/sitebow/Imitationsgb.php HOW WOULD YOU RECOGNIZE A REAL BOW KITE? The BOW concept, developed by Dominique and Bruno Legaignoux since 2002, was introduced during summer 2005 by the licensed brands Cabrinha et Takoon. What officially defines a Bow kite according to the US patent application US 2005/0230556 A1 is the concave trailing edge, "during flight, when viewed from above".(page 1 [0013]) This concept offers many advantages compared to the C-kites: - Huge depower for far more security. In case of gust or piloting mistake, all you have to do is to release the bar to stop the power; - Very easy to relaunch (no need to swim); - Very large wind range, allowing a safer and cheaper practice. Its success was so considerable since its introduction that quite every brand followed the crowd in order not to disappear. Some of them took a license (see list). Their wings integrate all the qualities of the Bow concept and are a guarantee of seriousness for the buyer since Diamond White helps its licensees to develop quality wings. Others market concave trailing edge wings but pretend not to depend upon the Diamond White patents and give to their models ambiguous generic terms: 100% depower, SLE, hybrid, flat, "Bow style". At last, some brands developed wings that are real C-kite/Bow kite hybrids. These wings generally have a smaller depower than the Bow kite, and particularly a relaunch ability closer to the one of a C-kite: It's necessary to swim to relaunch the kite, whereas all you have to do to relaunch a Bow kite is to pull on a back line. The whole wings, which common point is to have a large depower, have logically supplanted the C-kite and now make up more than 90% of the world sales. Then, how to differentiate those 3 wing types?. 1/ The Bow wings respecting Diamond White's Intellectual Property rights have a concave trailing edge, and bear a Certificate of Authenticity on one of their tips. 2/ The wings having a concave trailing edge when they are flying, seen from above, but which don't bear a Certificate of Authenticity are probably infringing wings. The manufacturers, distributors, sellers and owners of such wings are likely to be prosecuted. 3/ The hybrid wings have a straight or convex trailing edge when the kite is flying, viewed from above (Diamond White will shortly publish a list of hybrid wings, i.e. that are not included in the Bow patents) The best way to determine the trailing edge shape is to make a picture of the kite in the air seen from above. For that, the pilot places the kite at the right or left side of the wind window (close to the ground) and the photographer places himself far enough behind the kite, lined up on the lines, the pilot hidden by the kite ( we can possibly see his legs). The ideal thing would be to take pictures of the wing in the following positions: kite sheeted-in close to the stalling, kite sheeted-out but without falling, and kite in intermediary position. The only thing left to do is to draw on the picture of the normal flight wing a stroke parallel to the trailing edge axis. It should be noted that pictures taken from or close to the pilot, so lined up on the lines, give the same result, and enable to determine the shape of the trailing edge too. As an end to this topic, Diamond White owns other patents on the bow concept. Every brand marketing a hybrid kite, i.e. with a not-concave trailing edge but using other technologies patented by Diamond White must take a license for those technologies. Labels: Kites Fin-tastic new steering system from "Shredda"Tuesday, March 06, 2007![]() This new advanced steering system has been designed to propel the worldwide water-craft industry into the 21st Century and beyond, by means of a quick fitting system, enhanced speed and sleek performance for surfboards. This concept is an alternative to today’s tedious and time consuming process of board manufacturing. Shredda Advanced Steering Systems inspiration was to come up with a better and easier way of finishing off surfboards and to strive in making the surfing industry safer for all surfers while staying focused on the environment’s needs. While developing the Shredda we drew upon the specifications of Jet fighters, the speed they travel at, and their sleek performance cutting through the air. We applied that criteria to then trying to eliminate the drag that surfboard fins produce. Shredda have been working on this new design for 3 years to produce a dynamic product and to enhance the performance of surfboards.By designing our own fitting system for the Shredda, we have now advanced the way we finish off our surfboards and have eliminated the excessive attention required in attaching conventional fin systems in surfboard manufacturing today. This Engineer Designed product can be fitted to any old surfboard with a removable fin system, or new surfboards. Our system results in a substantially lighter surfboard. By following the fitting instructions and using the template supplied, you will ensure that your Shredda is fitted to your board for optimum performance.Being environmentally conscious and wanting to reduce environmental waste we then inquired about using recycled materials in our product. With further research, development and technology, we now use Polypropylene (100% recycled material) in the manufacturing of our Shredda Pro 1 & Pro 2. We have manufactured this product to be affordable to all surfers by keeping the price under $100 Retail and making it available at all surf shops and board manufacturers.
